Salybia Mission Project (SMP), a non religious, student organization at Ross University School of Medicine. It is also a nationally recognized non-profit organization in Dominica. All money collected will help defray the costs associated with shipping the supplies to Dominica and paying any associated fees. Any surplus will be directed towards future projects such as locally purchasing building supplies (please see Future Projects below).
Hurricane Maria's devastation in September 2017 resulted in the evacuation of Ross University School of Medicine from Dominica. On August 3rd 2018, the school announced that it will no longer be returning to Dominica. Despite Ross' departure from the island, SMP's commitment to the Kalinago Community remains. All past fundraising efforts will continued to be directed to them, while we restructure the organization.

February 2018: Medical Mission of SMP Founders - click to Read
Three of the original SMP members traveled to Dominica to volunteer their medical expertise and experience. Dr. Sylvia Marcos, Dr. Samuel Heath Nay and Dr. Kevin Price. They are graduates of Ross University School of Medicine (2006), and board certified, licensed, practicing physicians of Internal Medicine in Canada, and Emergency Medicine in the United States, respectively.
As fully licensed physicians in Dominica, they worked along side other international physicians and nurses at Princess Margaret Hospital, and alongside local nurses and physicians in the Kalinago Territory. |

Their visit coincided with that of President Bill Clinton, who was in Dominica to announce the Clinton Foundation’s commitment to help Dominica become a climate resilient nation. While in the territory, the founders worked at the Salybia Clinic, as well as the one in Mahout River and Castle Bruce which also serve the Kalinago Community. They also met with the Kalinago Council Chief and the representative responsible for housing to better understand the immediate needs of the community, extending beyond the medical to include other social determinants of health. The hope is that this is the first of many such trips to support the Kalinago people and Dominica as a whole.
JUNE 2018: SHIPPING donated SUPPLIES TO DOMINICA - click to read
Over the past few months, the Student Board, Executive Board and Founders group have been working diligently to procure medical and humanitarian supplies to send to Dominica. Donations have poured in from across the country and indeed around the world, with donors purchasing items from our Amazon Wish List and making monetary donations through our Paypal account. Supplies ranged from bandages & gauze to bed sheets& personal hygiene items to hammers and nails. This effort expanded SMP's usual scope of medical supplies and equipment, to include items that will also enhance the community's social determinants of health. All of the nearly $10,000 US worth of items purchased were in keeping with the expressed needs of the Kalinago Council, and also identified by the Founders on their volunteer medical mission earlier this year.

Thanks to the partnership and support of Ross University School of Medicine, the donations are being packaged and transported to a shipping container that slated to leave the port of Miami, Florida on June 13, 2018.

Upon arrival in Dominica, the supplies will be transported by Ross University School of Medicine staff to the Territory where it will be handed over to the Kalinago Council. SMP trusts the community leaders to ensure that these supplies will be distributed to their people according to their needs. Medical supplies will stock the shelves of the Salybia Clinic as well as those in Mahout River and Castle Bruce, all of which serve the Kalinago community.
Future Projects: building homes & supporting dominican merchants - CLICK TO READ
In an effort to support local businesses while providing humanitarian aid to the Kalinago community, SMP intends to reach out to local Dominican merchants who sell building & hardware supplies, basic living amenities like beds, linens, small appliances, etc. The Kalinago people will have autonomy to decide and choose what supplies they most need and the quantities of each, while simultaneously supporting local merchants and contributing to the Dominican economy.
