Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)
Women’s Health Initiative
The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), created in 2003 by student members, began addressing the pertinent needs of a particularly vulnerable population in the Carib Territory. Women and children in the Territory have faced specific problems in their society that cannot be ignored, and many of them - if not all - have a direct impact on their health.
Focusing mostly on the needs of women in the area, the WHI continues to enforce various aspects of well being. Various services and resources have been provided to the patients of our clinics in an attempt to ameliorate their situations. These include but are not limited to the following:
Prevention of cervical cancer with the consistent use of pap smears
Early detection of breast cancer through breast self-examinations (BSE)- Information regarding diet and nutrition for all stages of life (from pediatric to geriatric)
- Education concerning proper use of contraceptives and other means of family planning
- Guidance and direction when faced with the risk of domestic abuse
- Advice on prevention of HIV and other STD’s
- Information that is relevant to the care of children and siblings
