New Clinic Construction

New Clinic Construction

Since 2002, SMP has tried to work alongside the Carib Territory’s Tribal Council in constructing a new Salybia Health Clinic. The clinic is intended to provide adequate medical space for the area and to replace the Salybia school as the site for SMP clinic visits. Although some progress has been made, the clinic is currently far from complete.

Funding, resources, and labor are always in demand, and any donations or manpower is greatly appreciated. For more information on donations, please click here.

Two Salybia e-board members (Eric Djenge and Jennifer Sabatier) keep us informed of the progress of the clinic construction. They work hand-in-hand with members of the Tribal Council in the Carib Territory and Mr. John Hawley, SMP’s faculty advisor. Eric and Jennifer also coordinate special Clinic Construction Trips in which students can volunteer time to the development of the site.

The goal of the construction trips is to at least initiate projects in the hopes that others in the Carib Territory will continue and complete the work. Please see below for a sample construction clinic trip.

Work crew of Carib volunteers
and SMP members

In early April 2005, three SMP members contributed to the construction of the clinic by assisting volunteer Carib workers in paving a road leading to the clinic. Clinic Construction Assistant Eric Djenge and SMP members Xavier Jimenez and Victoria O’Connor were able to clear a path, mix some concrete, and lay down the cement on a new road leading to the clinic.

Although the road was not completed that very day, SMP members were able to motivate the volunteer Carib workers to continue on the project.
