About SMP

The Salybia Mission Project (SMP) is the creation of medical students of Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica to bring into service their talents, interests, and experience, and to enhance their clinical experience in order to improve their skills as medical practitioners.

SMP is an independent, non-sectarian, non-profit health service and education outreach to assist in serving the health care needs of the people of Dominica. Recognizing that the indigenous Carib people of Dominica have urgent and persistent health care needs, the primary focus of SMP is on the needs of the people in the Carib Territory of Dominica.

The Salybia Mission Project (SMP) aims to fulfill the above-stated mission by:

• Operating, coordinating, and staffing a medical clinic in the Carib Territory to improve the quality and availability of health care for all who come;
• Securing, improving, and maintaining a quality facility in which the clinic may be conducted;
• Securing through purchase or donation the required supplies and equipment to enable the clinic to serve successfully;
• Developing ancillary programs and services, such as medical transport, which will contribute to the health care program of the clinic;
  • Conducting educational programs in order to:
  • Improving client self-care capability
  • Improving widespread knowledge of community health issues o Preparing people for professional or paraprofessional service at the clinic or in the community
• Advocating on behalf of the client community to assure their needs and interests are met equitably within the larger national health care system;
• Responding positively to new opportunities for service that will enhance the success of SMP’s work within the community;
• Working with others to emulate successful SMP programs other places on the island.
